Obituary for Emma Swartz (Mariasis)

Emma Swartz
March 9, 1926 – February 15, 2022

Emma Swartz, of Hingham, formerly of Malden, Revere, and North Falmouth, Massachusetts, died on February 15, 2022 at 95 years of age. Her warmth, friendliness, and deep love of friends and family best embody her life.

Born in Malden in 1926 to Morris and Martha Mariasis, she married Allen Swartz, "the boy next door," as they both grew up on the same street. They were together for 71 years. Allen pre-deceased Emma in 2018.

Emma was the devoted mother of Mitchell Swartz and his wife, Gayle Verner-Swartz, late beloved teacher and devoted mother and wife Ann Levin and her husband, Larry, and Susan Woods and her husband, Barry. Emma was the beloved sister of Julius Mariasis of Florida. She was the loving and adored grandmother of Joshua Gyllinsky of Rhode Island, David Casavant of New Hampshire, Michael Levin and wife, Kate Williams Levin, of Scituate, Gregory Levin and wife, Priya Naik, of Maryland, Jared Woods of Colorado, and Marshall Woods of Maine. She was also the great grandmother of Norah, Sadie, Benjamin, and Andrew Levin, and devoted aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Emma attended Malden High School and competed on the girl's swim team. She continued to love swimming her whole life, especially in the warm Cape Cod water of Old Silver Beach, which contributed to her good health and longevity. She worked as a bookkeeper and volunteered at Malden’s Temple Tifereth Israel and in the local social services community. She loved music and art, and was creatively gifted, designing her own line of fashion sweatshirts and exquisite 3-D shadow boxes. She also loved spending time with her family as well as reading, playing mah-jong, and watching the Red Sox. Emma was the family Matriarch who instilled generosity, strength, commitment to public interest, and a progressive spirit in others. She demonstrated great wisdom, judgment, and impactful decision-making. Her natural and timeless sense of style, superb organizational skills, and meticulous attention to detail fashioned her life and the lives of those she taught and cherished.

As a gesture of sympathy, donations may be sent to the Malala Fund.

An outdoor service and funeral will be held at the Sharon Memorial Park 40 Dedham Street, Sharon at 1:45 PM on Friday, February 18th.
