Obituary for Florence Lillian Barat (Zide)
ONE IN A MILLION
Florence L Barat (née Zide) passed away peacefully on March 29, 2020 at the Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett, MA after contracting COVID 19. She was the loving mother to Jeffrey Barat and Phillip Barat; grandmother to Rachel Barat, Julia Barat, Robert Barat, and Adrianna Ammerman; mother-in-law to Cathy Cohan, Kim Barat, and Linda Barat; aunt to Russell and Jennifer Zide, Jay Zide, Michael and Terry Barat, Nelu and Marie France Bercu, Paul and Mala Raducanu, Rodiqua Vutescu, Sylvia Bercu and to more than a dozen great and great-great nephews and nieces. Florence was pre-deceased by her husband Willy Barat, her parents Hyman and Gertrude Zide and her brothers, Harold Zide and David Zide.
Florence grew up during the Depression in Malden, MA where she spent most of her life. In 1952 at a B’nai B’rith convention in Boston, she met her husband, Willy, who as a 17-year old, had fled post-war Romania. After only three dates, he proposed – true love at first sight – and they had a long and loving marriage of 61 years.
For the last 20 years, Florence lived at the Jack Satter House in Revere, MA surrounded by friends who counted on her to help out in a pinch, to make them laugh and to challenge them at their weekly mahjong games where she usually ended up as the big winner – walking away with between $1.50 and $2.50 a night.
Florence touched the lives of so many people and will be remembered fondly for the love and kindness she shared. Her easy laugh, her sparkling eyes and her friendly spirit will be missed greatly by all. Florence Barat was truly one in a million.
