Obituary for James Alvin "Jim" Kaufman
It is with sadness that we mourn the passing on Wednesday, January 27, in Swampscott, Massachusetts, of James Kaufman (z"l), cherished husband for 52 years of May; beloved father of Charles Kaufman and fiancé Maria Procopio and Fraya and Jeremy Cohen; adored grandfather of Ellie, Sadie, Lyla and Russell Cohen, loving brother of Doris Kaufman, Jeanne Zucker (a”h), Cecile and Al Rothaus, and Bette Elfman.
Jim (z"l) was born in Revere, MA -- son of Sophie (a”h) and Frank (z"l). He earned both a Bachelors of Engineering and an M.B.A from Northeastern University, and enjoyed a 50-year career as an electrical engineer at Crystalonics, Raytheon, and Analog Devices, at times working multiple jobs at the same time. He served in the Air National Guard, was a member of the Mason’s, and served on the Board of Directors of Temple Shalom in Salem, MA. An all-night poker player and passionate fan of all Boston sports teams, he was a card-carrying member of the Knothole Gang of Boston Braves fans who received a season’s pass to the left field pavilion of Braves Field for fifty cents during the “Spahn, Sain, and pray for rain” era.
Jim met the love of his life, May, at the Concord Resort in the Catskills in 1965 and would drive fourteen hours each way on most weekends thereafter to visit her in Pittsburgh, PA prior to their wedding in 1968. Jim was a devoted and loving husband, son, brother, and father, and would go to great lengths to support his loved ones at a moment’s notice. All who knew him were touched by his generosity, humor, and willingness to attempt any repair - he was the epitome of a mensch.
He was 92.
A private funeral and burial services will be held tomorrow, Thursday, 28 January in Lynn, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made in Jim’s (z"l) loving memory to the American Heart Association.
