Michael I. Gendlerman, M.D.

Dr. Michael Gendlerman of North Andover, Massachusetts, passed away on July 22, 2020 after a long illness. He was originally from the former Soviet Union in what is now Kiev, Ukraine, and emigrated to the United States at the age of 17 with his parents. Dr. Gendlerman then lived in Queens, New York, where he attended City University of New York, studying engineering before switching to pre-medical studies. He earned his M.D. at New York University School of Medicine and did his internship and residency at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Gendlerman eventually headed to Massachusetts, where he ultimately joined the internal medicine practice of his brother, Dr. Josef Gendlerman. The practice resided in Andover, MA for many years before relocating to Lawrence more than ten years ago.

“Dr. Michael” was known for his bushy, “Magnum P.I.” moustache, and his patience and kindness towards his patients, particularly his elderly patients, with whom he had a special bond. He enjoyed a good joke, particularly when it involved slapstick humor, and could quote an entire Benny Hill routine by heart. He was a reliable presence at family holiday meals and could be found afterwards dozing in front of the TV, while ostensibly watching English Premier League soccer with his brother. He also liked computers and loved fussing with various electronic do-it-yourself components, which he would string together to produce an unintelligible tangle of wires in his quest to create new devices for unclear purposes, which everyone was afraid to touch.

Dr. Gendlerman was a caring son to his parents, Sura and Isaac Gendlerman, who pre-deceased him, and is survived by his brother “Dr. Josef,” his sister-in-law, Lynda Rushing, and his nieces, Kira and Emma Gendlerman. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, or to any charitable cause.

Condolences to brother Joseph and Dr. Michael's staff at the doctor's office.
I'll miss one of the most efficient doctors I know. I remember him diagnosing one of my ailments in mere minutes several years ago. His death came as a shock to me as I had visited him for my annual physical just a few weeks ago. He will be sorely missed!
