Obituary for Michael Bennett Roberts

Dr. Michael Roberts, 73, a resident of Andover, died Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston surrounded by his loving wife Jane and three children.

Michael was born in Boston, son of Ruth Roberts and the late Simon Roberts; brother of Carl Roberts and the late Betsy Roberts. He attended Newton public schools and graduated from Buckingham Browne & Nichols in 1968. Michael received his BA from Harvard College in 1973 and graduated from UMass Medical School in 1978. During his residency at UMass Medical, he met Jane Levine Roberts and they were married in 1980. After moving to Andover in 1983, Michael founded his medical practice, Gastroenterology Consultants, in Lowell, and was a founding member of Northeast Endoscopy Center in 2006.

Michael will be remembered as a dedicated and respected member of the Lowell Medical Community by patients, nurses and colleagues during his 35 years in practice before retiring in 2018.

Michael was a warm and compassionate man who loved adventure and had an unyielding desire to live life to the fullest. He will be remembered for his keen intellect, his unfailing sense of humor and his love of nature.

His favorite activities included downhill skiing in Alta, Utah, hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and sea kayaking on the southern coast of Maine. Photography, squash, fencing, music and ballroom dancing were just a few of his many interests. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Survived by his wife of 43 years, Jane Levine Roberts; children, Katherine B. Cohen and her husband, David Cohen, Eliza B. Roberts and her husband Aaron Beitman, Jacob W. Roberts; grandchildren, Elliott and Theodore Cohen; Zoe, Max and Rose Beitman; brother, Carl Roberts, his wife, Susan Roberts, and their son Finn Roberts.

Special recognition and thanks to Dr. Joseph H. Antin and the entire Dana Farber and Brigham and Women’s staff for the extraordinary care given during his illness. Services at Temple Beth Shalom 21 East Foster Street, Melrose on Sunday November 19 at 1:00 PM. Interment at Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover. Condolence calls may be made following the interment at his late residence. A second night of Shiva will take place at Temple Beth Shalom in Melrose on November 20 at 7pm.
