Obituary for Rosalind Goldfischer (Newman)
May 1, 1935 – August 28, 2019
Rosalind Goldfischer was born in Utica, NY, the daughter of Samuel and Molly Newman, Polish immigrants who opened a small tailor shop that became Newman’s Furs of Utica and employed three generations of the Newman family. Rosalind was the youngest of four children and graduated from Utica College with a degree in business, then worked in New York City as a buyer. She met her beloved husband Stanley Goldfischer, who was a concentration camp survivor, while in a rowboat in the Catskills and it was love at first sight. They married, lived in Brooklyn, then moved to Valley Stream, NY where they lived for 45 years and raised their two children, Susan and Allen.
Once her children were old enough, Rosalind attended Hofstra University and earned a master’s degree in education. She worked as a substitute teacher for many years in a low-income community. Rosalind then brought her education and business skills to her work for the Girl Scouts of America’s national headquarters in Manhattan which included planning major national and worldwide events. Rosalind then worked as the office manager in an architectural firm that became Goldfischer Architecture, not long after her son Allen, a graduate of Cooper Union, joined the firm.
Both Rosalind and Stanley were active members of Congregation Tree of Life in Valley Stream and Rosalind was a behind the scenes recording secretary, assisting Stanley in the position over several decades for the Andrew Johnson Odd Fellows Lodge. Rosalind was an avid gardener - particularly fond of roses, a dedicated volunteer, and once their children were grown enjoyed travelling around the world with Stanley, as designated family photographer. Roz and Stan enjoyed every moment they spent together and were rarely apart. After he retired, Stanley would go to Allen’s office with Rosalind, to be with her and help Allen. Rosalind was also proud of her children, the family stayed in close touch and would vacation together. Following the unexpected death of their son, Rosalind and Stanley moved to Westboro, MA, to be closer to their daughter, Susan. Rosalind was a dedicated wife, mother and worker who gave her all in all she did.
Rosalind, wife of Stanley, mother of Allen of New York City, sister of Gerald Newman of Utica, NY, sister of Lillian Field of Valley Stream, NY, sister of Helen Hammer of Searingtown, NY, each of whom predeceased her.
Rosalind is survived by her, daughter Susan and her partner Mary Anne of Hudson, MA, nephew Stuart Newman and his spouse Kate, nephew Howard Field and his spouse Sharon of Merrick, NY, Norman Hammer and his spouse Randy of Needham, MA, niece Diane Hammer and her spouse Robin of West Roxbury, MA, niece Mindy Hammer and her spouse Eric of Cincinnati, OH, niece Marcia Ellis and her spouse Mark of Wells, NY, nephew Michael Field and his spouse Stacey of Valley Stream, NY and a wonderful family of great nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Beth David Cemetery, in Elmont, NY on Sunday, Sept.1st at 2:00 pm and visitation/shiva will be Wednesday, Sept. 4th 5:30pm-8:00pm at The Willows, 1 Lyman Street - 4th floor, Westboro, MA.
