Obituary for Ruth D. Katz (Weiner)

Ruth Diane (Weiner) Katz, formerly of Malden, passed away peacefully at the Rosewood Nursing Home of Peabody on August 23, 2023. She was a month shy of her 105th birthday, having survived her late husband, Hy Katz, by twenty years. Ruth was born in Malden, the daughter of the late Sam and Sarah (Goldblatt) Weiner.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Barbara L. Katz of Charlestown, and her son, David Evans Katz and his wife Shawn Ball of Granby, Connecticut; her grandchildren, Patrick Katz and his wife Anyae Katz of Brooklyn, New York, Samantha Marconi and her wife Landi Arlotti of Temple City, California, and Zac Marconi and his wife Charlotte Baillieul and their daughter Frances of Brookline. She had many nieces, nephews and cousins as well as their children and grandchildren who live in many parts of the country and in Europe and whose lives she eagerly followed.

Ruth’s family had deep roots in Malden where her grandparents settled at the turn of the last century from what was then the Russian Empire. Growing up in the section of Malden formerly known as Suffolk Square, she attended Lincoln School and Malden High School, graduating in 1937. She was a longtime active member of the former Temple Tifereth Israel of Malden, which subsequently merged with Temple Tiferet Shalom in Peabody.

Ruth met her beloved husband Hy in the summer of 1943 while she and two of her close friends were vacationing on Cape Cod, where Hy was in the Army training for amphibious assaults. After Hy deployed to the South Pacific, they wrote to each other nearly every day for the next three years and married when Hy returned from the War in 1946. Their timeless romance is memorialized by their wartime correspondence, published in the book Dear Ruthy.

Interment will be in a private ceremony at Lebanon Tifereth Israel Cemetery in Peabody. Memorial messages may be left here on the website of Goldman Funeral Chapel.
