Obituary for Saul "Bucky" Flieder

Saul (Bucky) Flieder, 89, passed away peacefully on December 19th at the High Pointe Hospice in Haverhill, MA where he was being cared for after suffering two strokes in mid-August.

Saul was the son of the late Dorothy and Morris Flieder of Lawrence Mass. Brought up in Lawrence, Saul was a graduate of Lawrence High School and received his mechanical engineering degree from Purdue University in 1953. He served as a member of the Army Chemical Corps in Bethesda, MD for two years and was honorably discharged. He earned his professional engineering degree and retired from Textron Corporation in 1984. He and his wife Selma (Schwartz) Flieder resided in Andover, MA for thirty-five years. After moving to Haverhill, they became snowbirds living in Naples, FL eight months of the year until December of 2019.

Saul had many interests including woodworking, auto repair, and home renovations, for which he taught his sons well as they’ve carried on with the same aptitude and interests to this day. He never shied away from a challenge and was known to make major renovations to the family home while his boys learned from him and helped as they could. He rebuilt many vehicles that others might have considered a lost cause. Upon his retirement was an engineering consultant and spent several years doing major construction projects for family and friends. Prior to moving to Florida for the long winter months, he took wood carving classes and the birds and fish that adorn his home are evidence of his outstanding talent. After a stroke ten years ago, he was unable to carve so he taught himself wood turning. His creativity produced magnificent turnings and friends and family cherish their “Bucky bowls”.

Saul was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Besides his wife of 63 years, he is survived by his three sons, Michael of Mt. Dora, FL, Steve of Hopkinton, MA and his wife Donna and their children Kaitlyn, Drew, Katie, and Nick, and Jeff of Atkinson, NH and his wife Laura and their children Rebecca and Josh. He is also survived by his brother Barry and his wife Dede of Maryland, a sister-in-law Naomi of California, and several nieces and nephews.

A small graveside service for close family was held at the Temple Emanuel Cemetery in Lawrence. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Temple Emanuel 7 Haggetts Pond Road Andover, MA 01810.
