Obituary for Theodore Simon "Ted" Azer
Theodore (Ted) S. Azer of Peabody, formerly of North Andover and Lynnfield, passed away on April 29, 2020 from Covid-19 at the age of 89.
He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Cynthia (Schweitzer) and was survived by his partner Elaine Goodman of Danvers. He was the father of Terri B. Nickerson and her late husband John R. Nickerson of Duxbury, Scott H. Azer and his partner Ildiko Van Rhijn of Brookline, and Charles R. Azer and his wife Elaine Miller of Atlanta, GA. He was the beloved Papa Ted to his grandchildren Rebecca Azer and her fiancé Phillip Niles of Bridgton ME, Lauren (Nickerson) Behm and her husband Ilan of Engelwood, CO, Rachel (Azer) Cuffy and her husband Marcel of North Andover, Jamie Nickerson and her fiancé Patrick O’Donnell of Denver, CO, and Daniel Azer and his partner Sharon Lee of Seattle, WA, and Elan Miller of Atlanta and was a second father to his daughter-in-law Becky (Azer) Alexander and her husband James Alexander of Danvers. He is also survived by his great-granddaughters Mia, Aviva, Liliana, Madelyn, Liya, Hope and Melody, by his brother Philip Azer and his late wife Evelyn of San Diego, CA and by many nieces and nephews.
Ted was a pharmacist, beginning his career at the family pharmacy in Chelsea. Although he remained in the pharmacy business through most of his working life, his entrepreneurial spirit also led him to seek new business opportunities and to be his own boss. During the 60’s, he owned and operated the Arnold Palmer Putting Course in Peabody. In the 80’s, he sold small novelty items and horoscopes to stores throughout New England.
He was an avid golfer and belonged to a bowling league for many years. He loved to play bridge, meeting regularly with a group of friends for decades. He was a fantastic teller of “dad jokes”, and he enjoyed word puzzles of all kinds. Ted especially loved photography; he had a home darkroom for many years and was an early embracer of the digital format. He was an active member of the Merrimack Valley Camera Club for many years, and his love of photography inspired the same in his children.
Ted and Cindy were adventurers, and traveled to Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Bali, Singapore, Spain, Italy and many US destinations during their retirement.
