Flossed with Memories

I am now 54 years old. But as a skinny, whimpy 4 year old little Mama's boy, I sat in Dr. Norman Becker's big, brown dental chair on Shirley Avenue, Revere for the first time. If his kind voice and compassion did not calm me, then it was certainly his wonderful ability to make that small, cotton dental swab suddenly disappear, and then magically reappear as a quarter which had been somehow tucked behind my ear those past 4 years. I grew up and lived in Revere at my family home for almost 40 years, in a bygone time when Revere was truly a wonderful place to live and grow up. Throughout this era, Dr. Becker was the only dentist I had ever known. When my dental insurance was not covered by his practice, I regrettably needed to seek care closer to my present home in Salem, MA. What words can one use to truly describe the beautiful nature and compassion of Dr. Norman Becker? What sentiments can one share to fully capture his caring ways and professionalism? How can one express what he meant to so many people, and how much he will be missed? I thank God for those countless moments I got to spend in Dr. Becker's company in that big brown dental chair. I am now so grateful that I did not floss or brush more, for it meant more time with Dr. Becker. I will forever recall our many wonderful conversations, stories and jokes, and I will cherish them forever. I close now, yet through my tears, I will continue to honor the memory of Dr. Norman Becker, as I look each day, with the hopes of once again, finding that magical quarter tucked behind my ear. With Most Sincere and Heartfelt Sympathy, Danny Garbett
