It’s been 50 years since Ethel was a feature character in my life, back when Marilyn and I were high school best friends. One of my fondest memories of that time is after school days with Marilyn, trying but happily failing to resist eating many of Ethel’s fabulous brownies and chocolate chip cookies. I can taste them to this day.

Not only was Ethel a wonderful cook, her impeccable sense of style, often accented by her delicate and beautiful antique jewelry, was an inspiration to my young fashionista self.

Her kindness was never more evident than, when my brother Len had been struck with epilepsy, was having regular seizures and other friends were pulling away in fear, she invited him to Marilyn’s wedding anyway. My mother Rita never forgot that gesture.

I did meet up with Ethel now and then over the years when I was home visiting in Medford. Her vivacity, humor and warm smile always made me feel as if no time had passed.

My sincere condolences and affectionate hellos to Marilyn, Mark and the extended family.

May you find comfort in knowing that your dear one is safe in the memory of God, who will remember every detail about her and bring her back again. “God is close to the brokenhearted; he saves those who are crushed in spirit.”—Psalms 34, verses 18-19.
